FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does acupuncture work?

In traditional Chinese medicine, there's this idea of "qi" (pronounced “chee”), a vital energy that flows through your body. If that flow gets blocked or out of balance, it leads to illness. Acupuncture helps get everything flowing again by gently placing super-fine needles at specific points on your body, called acupoints. These points sit along pathways known as meridians. The needles encourage your body to respond naturally, stimulating your nervous system, releasing feel-good chemicals like endorphins, and helping bring things back into balance. You can learn more about the process and application of acupuncture in our blog post how does acupuncture work.

Does acupuncture hurt?

You might feel a tiny prick when the needle goes in, but it’s way less than, say, a shot or a blood draw. The needles used are much thinner and aren’t hollow like medical ones. Some people feel a dull ache or a bit of tingling once they’re in place. That’s totally normal and usually a sign the treatment is doing its thing. If you have any further concerns, we recommend reading our blog post does acupuncture hurt.

What conditions can acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture can support your body’s natural healing for both physical and emotional concerns. It’s been shown to help with nausea (especially after surgery or chemo), dental pain, migraines, menstrual cramps, back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, and even things like carpal tunnel and asthma. It can work on its own or alongside other treatments. For a complete list of issues that acupuncture can help with, please read our blog post what conditions can acupuncture help with.

How many sessions does it take to feel a difference?

It really depends on your body and what you’re treating. Some people notice changes after just one or two sessions. For more long-term or chronic issues, you might need several visits, often between 5 to 10, to really feel the full benefits. Your practitioner will guide you on the best plan.

Are the needles sterile and safe?

Absolutely. We only use sterile, single-use, disposable needles, so everything is super safe and hygienic. The needles are also incredibly thin (about the size of a human hair!) and inserted at just the right depth depending on the treatment area. They stay in for a few minutes up to about 20 minutes, depending on your needs.
